The petrol engines are located in front of the front axle of the car and tilted back by 30°.
In January 1988, four new sedan variants appeared in the Peugeot 405 range, including the GLD and GRD versions, equipped with a very successful 1905 cc engine3 power 51kW (70 hp). This engine was previously tested in the 305 model, as well as in the Citroen BX. Peugeot 405 equipped with this engine has a top speed of 165 km/h. Versions GLD and GRD differ only in some equipment features, namely tire sizes. The GRD version can also be equipped with a power steering system.
Among the above four models were also the GRD Turbo and SRD Turbo versions, which were equipped with the 1769cc XUD 7TE engine3 (derived from the above engine). Thanks to the turbocharger (Garrett T2 or KKK type K14) with an air cooler, this engine develops a power of 66 kW (90 hp). Peugeot 405 with such an engine can reach speeds of 180 km / h. Gearboxes for both types of engines differ in gear shifting.
In May 1988, variants of the Peugeot 405 car with a combi body appeared. These were the GLD, GRD, GRD Turbo and SRD Turbo versions. In terms of applied solutions, these versions are similar to their predecessors with a sedan body.
The suspension of the car uses proven design solutions. Front suspension - pseudo-McPherson type with a powerful lower arm (not repeated error model 309 GT). The elements of the front suspension are connected to a cross member made of welded steel sheets. The crossbar is the element to which the levers forged from steel are attached (from each side), stabilizer bearing and steering mechanism (together with rigid intermediate plates).
The non-power steering system has a 6-tooth drive gear and a gear ratio of 23.9. The power steering system has an 8-tooth drive gear and a gear ratio of 17.8.
To facilitate the maintenance of the Peugeot 405, several original solutions have been applied, namely:
- the connection between the exhaust pipe and the muffler is "two-cone", which greatly facilitates the replacement of parts;
- removal and installation of the clutch is possible without first removing the engine;
- in the support plates of the springs of the suspension columns, special holes are made for the cables holding the springs in a compressed state, which makes it easy to remove the shock absorbers;
- rear wheel bearings are replaced without adjustment;
- the brake drums have special holes through which you can easily determine the degree of wear of the brake pads without completely removing the assembly.
1990 models
All versions received a new BE3 gearbox derived from the BE1 gearbox. This gearbox features a new shift pattern with reverse gear opposite fifth gear.
In the SRDT version, the driver's seat cushion adjustment has been replaced with a height adjustment for the entire seat. Versions with a combi body received a special cover for luggage.
The GRDT, SRD and SRDT versions have a remote control for headlight adjustment.
1991 models
All models are equipped with a right rear-view mirror and a new steering wheel.
The GLD version uses door upholstery made of fabric instead of the previously used leatherette upholstery. Equipment for the installation of radio equipment is also used.
In the GRD and GRDT versions with a combi body, special covers for luggage appeared.
In the SRDT version, a block-controlled right window lift and an electrically controlled right mirror are used.
A new version of the SRD was introduced, which was characterized by the use of mechanical components from the GRD version and the trim of the SRDT version.
In April, a new version of the STDT was introduced, which received the equipment of the SRDT version, namely: anti-lock brakes, alloy wheels, remote control for locking the doors, leather upholstery, electrically controlled front seat heating, walnut lining on the doors and on the instrument panel, as well as electrically raised rear windows.
1992 models
In October 1991, a special series called "Style", characterized by the use of a metallized metallic coating, heated mirrors, tinted windows, central door locking and a power steering system.
In March 1992, two special editions went on sale:
- GLX version, based on the GLD version and equipped with a special fabric cover and "sports" wheel covers;
- GRX version, based on the GRD and GRDT versions and equipped with additional velor upholstery, central door locking, "sports" wheel covers and front left seat with height adjustment.
1993 models
Peugeot 405 cars have been upgraded. The most significant modifications were:
- a new trunk lid with a lower threshold for accommodating luggage;
- a new kind of salon;
- turbocharged engine 1905 cc3 instead of 1769 cc turbocharged engine3.
