The catalytic converter is a reliable and simple device that does not require any maintenance, but there are some facts that the owner should know to ensure maximum service life of the catalytic converter:
  • do not use leaded gasoline in a vehicle equipped with a catalytic converter, as the lead will coat the precious metals in the catalytic converter grid, reducing the efficiency of their conversion, and ultimately causing the catalytic converter to fail;
  • always keep ignition and fuel systems in good order;
  • if misfiring is observed during engine operation, do not operate the vehicle until the malfunction is corrected;
  • do not tow the engine;
  • do not turn off the ignition at high engine speeds;
  • do not use the vehicle if a trail of blue smoke is visible from the exhaust pipe;
  • after the engine has stopped, the exhaust system continues to emit a significant amount of heat for a long time, so you should avoid parking on grass and dry leaves;
  • remember that the catalytic converter is fragile, so avoid impacts when removing the catalytic converter or exhaust system.

A catalytic converter used on a well-tuned vehicle should last between 100,000 and 150,000 km.

The car body is equipped with thermal insulation from the catalytic converter. It is prohibited to paint the thermal insulation and the surfaces adjacent to it. Do not remove the thermal insulation from the car under any circumstances.
