Note. To unscrew the filler/inspection plug of the transmission, on some variants, an appropriate square head wrench may be required. These wrenches are available from many auto parts stores or your Peugeot/Citroen dealer.
1. Put the car on a flat horizontal platform. The oil level should be checked before driving or at least 5 minutes after the engine has been switched off. If the oil level is checked immediately after a trip, some of the oil will remain on the gearbox components, which will cause an inaccurate level reading.
2. Release the retainers and remove the service cover from the left wheel arch locker.
3. Wipe clean the area around the filler/level plug, which is located on the left end of the gearbox (pic. 21.3, a, b). Remove the plug and clean it. Discard the sealing washer.

4. The oil level should reach the lower edge of the filler/inspection hole. Some oil will accumulate behind the filler/level plug and will leak out when the plug is removed. This does not necessarily indicate the correct level. To ensure the correct level, wait until the initial streak of oil has dried up and then add oil if necessary until a new streak of oil appears. The level is considered correct when the oil flow stops. Use only the proper quality oil of the prescribed grade (Cm. «Lubricants and operating fluids»).
5. Filling the gearbox with oil is a very time-consuming procedure. First of all, before checking the oil level, wait until the level stabilizes (and this can take quite a long time). If a large amount of oil is added to the transmission and a large amount leaks out when checking the level, reinstall the filler/level plug and drive the vehicle for a short time so that the new oil is completely distributed between the elements of the transmission. Then, after the level has stabilized, check it again.
6. If the transmission has been overfilled so that oil flows out immediately after removing the filler/level plug, make sure the vehicle is level (in the longitudinal and transverse direction), and allow the excess to drain into a container.
7. When the correct level is reached, install a new sealing washer on the fill/level plug. Screw in the plug and tighten it to the prescribed torque. Wash off all traces of spilled oil, install the service cover and fix it with clips.
