1. Proper spark plug performance is essential to the proper operation and efficiency of the engine. Candles must match the specific engine (the corresponding types of spark plugs are given at the beginning of this chapter). If the correct spark plugs are used and the engine is maintained in good condition, the spark plugs do not require additional attention between scheduled replacement intervals. Cleaning spark plugs is extremely rare, and in the absence of a specialized tool, it is better not to undertake it, as the electrodes can be easily damaged.
2. On late models with a 1.4L engine and all models with a 1.6L engine, to gain access to the spark plugs, remove the ignition coil as described in chapter 5B.
3. On early models with a 1.4L engine, if the markings on the high voltage wires installed during vehicle assembly are not readable, mark the wires with numbers from 1 to 4 in accordance with which cylinder the wire goes to (cylinder number 1 - closest to the gearbox). Grasp the end of the wire and disconnect each wire from the corresponding spark plug. Pull on the tip, not the wire, so as not to damage the latter.
4. Before removing the spark plugs, it is recommended to remove dirt from the spark plug recesses to prevent dirt from entering the cylinders. To do this, use a clean brush, vacuum cleaner or compressed air.
5. Unscrew the spark plugs from the cylinder head using an appropriate spark plug wrench, a suitable ring wrench, or a long socket with extension (pic. 18.5). Keep the socket aligned with the candle - if it is moved to the side, you can break the ceramic.
