The battery charging indicator light does not light when the ignition is on



The battery is dead


  • Charge the battery. If you need to start the engine, use an external source or tow the engine

The battery wire is broken


  • Check the battery and wire connections, clean the terminals and tighten the bolts

The charging indicator light has burned out


  • Replace the light bulb

Open circuit between generator, ignition switch and indicator light


  • Check the circuit with a test light

Break in the ground (-) wire between the generator and the cylinder block


  • Check the wire

The carbon brushes are worn and do not fit snugly against the slip rings


  • Replace the carbon brushes

The voltage regulator is faulty


  • Replace the voltage regulator

Generator faulty


  • Repair or replace the generator

While washing the engine, water got on the generator


  • Blow with compressed air

The battery charge indicator light does not go out when the engine is running



The alternator drive belt is loose


  • Check the drive and belt tension

Poor contact connections


  • Check the wires and contacts

The carbon brushes are worn and do not fit snugly against the slip rings


  • Replace the carbon brushes

The voltage regulator is faulty


  • Replace the voltage regulator

Generator faulty


  • Repair or replace the generator
