The main conditions for testing the starter are reliable electrical contacts without oxidation.

The starter turns too slowly and does not turn the engine over or does not turn when the ignition is turned on. The indicator light is dim or goes out.

The battery is discharged

  • Charge the battery

Broken wire or insufficient current conductivity due to weak or oxidized contacts

  • Check the contacts and restore the wire connections

The starter shorts to ground (-)

  • Repair the starter.

The signal light is bright. The starter makes a clicking noise when starting

Carbon brushes do not fit tightly against the commutator

  • Check the carbon brushes and terminals, clean them or replace them. Check the carbon brush guides

The traction relay contacts are loose.

  • Replace the traction relay

The starter winding is broken.

  • Replace starter

The indicator light is on, but the starter does not engage and there is no clicking sound

  • Check the connecting wires

The starter engages and rotates, but the engine does not turn over

The traction relay is faulty

  • Replace the traction relay

Clutch engagement lever sticking

  • Repair the starter

The flywheel gear or ring gear is damaged

  • Put the car into gear and push it to travel some distance. Try starting the engine again. If the position does not change, the starter is faulty.

The starter continues to rotate even after the ignition key is released

The traction relay is stuck and won't turn off

  • Turn off the ignition immediately. Replace the traction relay

Clutch engagement lever sticking

  • Repair the starter

Defective ignition switch and starter

  • Replace the ignition and starter switch.

The gear does not disengage from the flywheel

Clutch springs are weak or broken

  • Turn off the ignition immediately. Repair the starter

The flywheel ring gear is damaged

  • Replace the starter or flywheel
