When voltage is applied, the traction relay extends the gear, which freely moves along the screw splines on the armature shaft and engages with the flywheel ring gear. As soon as the engine starts and begins to rotate at a higher speed than the starter, the gear disengages from the flywheel.
When replacing the starter, it is recommended to follow the manufacturer's instructions.
The starter can be checked without removing it. To do this, connect the wires from terminals 30 and 50 and connect it to the battery with auxiliary wires. If the starter in this case works flawlessly, then as a second step you need to check the power wires leading to the starter. If the starter does not work, then it should be dismantled and checked at the stand.
Checking the starter on the stand should be carried out in a workshop for the repair of electrical equipment. During such an inspection, it will be possible to determine whether the starter needs to be repaired or whether it should be replaced with a new one.
1. Disconnect the wire terminal «masses» (-) from the battery.
2. Unscrew the bolts, remove the heat shield 1 and disconnect the wires 2 (see illustration).
3.2 Unscrew the bolts, remove the heat shield 1 and disconnect the wires 2. Vehicles with ES9J4 engine
3. Unscrew the three bolts that secure the starter 3 and remove it (see illustration).
3.3 Unscrew the three bolts that secure the starter 3 and remove it
The starter is installed in the reverse order of its removal.
Replacing the traction relay
4. Disconnect the wire from the bottom terminal.
5. Unscrew the bolts that secure the traction relay to the starter housing and disconnect it from the retractor.
6. Install a new traction relay, proceeding in reverse order.
Replacement of carbon brushes
7. Unscrew bolts of fastening of a back cover of a starter.
8. Remove the springs and unscrew the screws securing the brushes or unsolder the brushes.
9. Install new brushes.
Attention! If only clicks are heard when the starter is turned on, then, most likely, the terminal on the negative pole of the battery has loosened. Check the terminal as well as the connection for «mass» (-).
