The battery charging indicator light should not light up while driving. If it is on, then there is a defect in the generator or voltage regulator. As a first step, check the fastening of the wires on the generator terminals.
1. Make sure the alternator drive belt is good.
We recommend entrusting the workshop with the subsequent check of the generator, if the above actions did not bring results. If further troubleshooting is carried out independently, then special care and attention is necessary so as not to confuse the terminals when connecting the measuring device. In this case, complete damage to the generator cannot be ruled out.
2. Connect a voltmeter to both battery terminals and start the engine.
3. Increase the engine speed and at the same time monitor the voltmeter readings. As soon as the voltmeter shows a voltage in the range of 13.5-14.8 V, leave the engine running at the speed at the time this voltage is indicated and turn on the maximum possible number of on-board network consumers. The battery voltage must remain within the specified values. If it changes, then, most likely, the voltage regulator is faulty or the generator brushes have worn out. If the voltmeter registers too high battery voltage, then the rectifier diodes are burned out.
If, as a result of the check, it turns out that the generator is faulty, then it can be removed and delivered to a workshop for repair. We do not recommend repairing a generator or voltage regulator on your own unless you have sufficient experience. If such a service is offered, then in the workshop it is possible to exchange the removed generator for a repaired one of the same model. Minor alternator repairs, such as replacing the carbon brushes, can be done at an electrical repair shop.
The generator is equipped with bearings that are lubricated for life and therefore do not require maintenance. The outer surface of the generator housing must be kept clean and free of water or solvents.
Carbon brushes work on slip rings and therefore their service life is quite long. If it is suspected that the carbon brushes may be the cause of the alternator power loss, it is recommended to contact an electrical repair shop.
