The engine has a displacement of 1998 cm³. However, the power plant based on this engine can be equipped with modified engines. Some vehicles are equipped with 8-valve engines with or without a turbocharger. Later models are equipped with 16-valve engines.
The 8-valve, non-turbocharged engine produces 121/123 hp (89 kW) and is designated "XU 10J2C," type code RFU. These engines are equipped with the Mignetti-Marelli MM8P22 multi-point fuel injection system.
The 8-valve turbocharged engine produces 135 hp (97 kW) and is designated "XU10J4R," type code RFV. These engines are equipped with a Bosch MM8P22 multi-point fuel injection system.
