This engine has a displacement of 2088 cc and produces 110 hp (80 kW). It is designated "XUD11BTE" and is a type RVS. This engine features three valves per cylinder and a Lucas-developed EPIC fuel injection system. The name of the fuel injection system translates as "electronically programmable fuel injection control.".

All models are equipped with a five-speed gearbox, which may have its own designation depending on the type of engine installed. Thus, cars with 1.8L and 2.0L engines without a turbocharger are equipped with the VEZ/5 gearbox. If the engine is equipped with a turbocharger, the ME5K gearbox is installed. Recently, cars with a turbocharger are equipped with a gearbox designated ML5E. This same gearbox is also installed on cars with 16-valve engines.

Cars with diesel engines are also equipped with different models of gearboxes. Vehicles with a 1.9-liter diesel engine are equipped with the ME5K gearbox, but the gear ratio has been selected specifically for these models. Beginning around 1997, ML5E gearboxes were installed instead of ME5K gearboxes. Vehicles with 2.1-liter diesel engines are equipped with ML5E gearboxes.

All vehicles are front wheel drive.
