1. If, from the date of purchase of the vehicle, you strictly adhere to the routine maintenance schedule as prescribed in this Manual and frequently check the level of working fluids and the degree of wear of the most susceptible components, the engine will remain in relatively good working order. Therefore, the need for additional work will be reduced to a minimum.

2. It happens that poor engine performance is a consequence of insufficient routine maintenance. This is most likely if you purchase a used car that has not undergone regular and frequent inspections. In such situations, it may be necessary to perform additional operations beyond the scope of routine maintenance.

3. If engine wear is suspected, a compression test will provide valuable information about the performance of the major internal components (see Chapter 2A). Such a check can be used as a basis for determining the scope of work required. For example, if a compression test indicates significant internal engine wear, a major overhaul is necessary first. In this case, the normal maintenance described in this paragraph will not provide any significant improvement in the engine's dynamic performance, but will only waste time and money.

4. The sequence below is the most frequently required operation to improve the dynamic performance of a poorly running engine:

a) Clean, inspect and test the battery (see "Weekly checks").
b) Check all engine related fluids (see "Weekly checks"),
c) Check the condition and tension of the accessory drive belt (paragraph 10).
d) Replace the spark plugs (paragraph 18).
d) Check the condition of the air filter element and replace it if necessary (paragraph 19).
e) Replace the fuel filter (paragraph 20).
g) Check the condition of all hoses and check them for leaks (paragraph 4).
