Table of contents: Removal 🠇 Refitting 🠇
Note: Access io the pedal pivot bolt is very poor, and can only be significantly improved by removing the facia as described in Chapter 11.
Removal
Right-hand drive models
1. With the use of an assistant, unscrew a couple of brake caliper bleeding nippies to enable the brake pedal to be pressed to the floor. Make sure that you catch any leaking brake fluid, as it attacks plastics.
2. While the brake pedal is pressed out of the way, unhook the cable from the upper end of the clutch pedal (see Section 3 for details).
3. Slacken and remove the nut and pivot bolt, then withdraw the clutch pedal from the vehicle, along with its assister spring.
4. Carefully clean all components, renewing any that are worn or damaged; check the bearing surfaces of the pivot bushes and bolt with particular care; the bushes can be renewed separately if worn.

5. Working as described in Section 2, slacken the clutch cable locknut and adjuster nut to obtain maximum freeplay in the cable.
6. Working inside the vehicle, undo the retaining nuts and remove the under-facia trim panel from the driver's side of the facia.
7. Unhook the clutch inner cable from the top of the clutch pedal.
8. Unscrew the nut from the pedal pivot bolt.
9. Noting the correct fitted position of the clutch pedal assister spring, withdraw the pivot bolt sufficiently to allow the pedal, spring and spacer to be removed.
10. Carefully clean all components, renewing any that are worn or damaged; check the bearing surfaces of the pivot bush and bolt with particular care; the bushes can be renewed separately if worn.
Refitting
Right-hand drive models
11. Press the pivot bushes into the pedal bore, then apply a smear of multi-purpose grease to their bearing surfaces.
12. Refit the pedal and spring to the vehicle, and install the pivot bolt. Refit the pivot bolt nut, and tighten it securely.
13. Check that the pedal pivots smoothly, tighten the brake caliper bleed nipples. Top up the brake fluid and, if necessary, bleed the brake system (see Chapter 9)
14. On completion check and, if necessary, adjust the clutch cable as described in Section 2. Left-hand drive models
15. Press the pivot bush into the pedal bore, then apply a smear of multi-purpose grease to its bearing surface.
16. Refit the pedal, spring and spacer to the vehicle, and install the pivot bolt. Ensure that the bolt is correctly engaged with the brake pedal, then refit the pivot bolt nut aid tighten it securely.
17. Hook the clutch cable onto the end of the pedal, then adjust the clutch cable as described in Section 2.
18. With the clutch cable correctly adjusted, refit the under-facia trim panel to the driver's side of the facia.
