Generator (A – Bosch, B – Mitsubishi, C – Valeo)
1 – pulley, 2 – fan, 3 – front housing, 4 – bearing, 5 – rotor, 6 – stator, 7 – brush holder-regulator, 8 – rear housing, 9 – rectifier unit
Removal the generator
1 – belt tensioner bolt, 2 – mounting bolt, 3 – connections
Removal
1. Disconnect the negative cable from the battery.
2. Loosen the generator fastening elements to its holders.
3. Loosen the V-belt tensioner.
4. Remove the V-belt.
5. Disconnect the electrical connections from the generator.
6. Unscrew the mounting bolts and remove the generator.
Installation
1. Install the generator in place and tighten the mounting bolts only slightly.
2. Put on the V-belt.
3. Tighten the belt until the required tension is achieved.
4. Screw in the fastening elements.
5. Connect the electrical connections.
6. Connect the battery.
Adjusting the alternator belt tension
1. Loosen the generator mounting elements.
2. Using the tensioner bolt, adjust the belt tension to obtain the required value.
3. Screw in the fastening elements and check the tension adjustment.
Attention! To adjust the belt tension, it is recommended to use the Krikit device first (peugeot designation).
Generator repair
The steps for disassembling and assembling the generator are not complicated.
1. During mechanical repair of the generator, the following steps should be performed.
2. Assess the condition of the brushes, their degree of wear, position, and pressure on the contact rings.
3. Assess the condition of the contact rings, which should be cleaned only with a piece of material soaked in gasoline or trichloroethylene and polished with fine sandpaper; sandpaper should never be used.
4. Assess the condition of bearings that do not require any maintenance action; the bearings are lubricated for the entire service life.
5. Assess the condition of the rotor and stator, the windings of which should not have any breaks or signs of burnout.
Attention! When checking the electrical parameters of the generator, and especially the rectifier, the equipment used should not produce a voltage greater than 14 V (this threatens to damage some elements of the generator).
Attention! Rectifier diodes are sensitive to temperature, therefore when replacing them soldering should be done quickly and with a low-power soldering iron.
