Basic faults of suspension and steering (Peugeot 406)

Before checking the suspension and steering, check that the tire pressure is correct, the front wheel alignment is correct, and the vehicle is evenly loaded.

The car pulls to the side

• the tire is faulty;
• excessive wear in suspension or steering components;
• incorrect wheel alignment;
• damage to suspension or steering components.

Wheel runout and vibration

• the front wheels are not balanced (vibration is felt on the steering wheel);
• the rear wheels are not balanced (vibration can be felt throughout the entire car);
• damage or distortion of the wheel shape;
• damage or distortion of the tire shape;
• ball joints or suspension bushings are worn out;
• the wheel mounting bolts are not tightened securely.

Excessive vehicle rocking

• the shock absorbers are faulty;
• insufficient elasticity of the suspension spring;
• wear or breakage of the stabilizer link.

Instability of the car when driving

• incorrect adjustment of front wheel alignment angles;
• wear of ball joints and bushings of the front suspension;
• the wheels are unbalanced;
• the tire is deformed or damaged;
• the wheel mounting bolts are not tightened securely;
• the shock absorbers are faulty.

Tight steering

• jamming of ball joints of steering gear or suspension;
• the power steering belt is torn or incorrectly adjusted;
• the front wheel alignment angles are incorrectly adjusted;
• damage to the steering gear.

Increased steering play

• the steering column shaft is worn out;
• the ball joints of the steering rods are worn out;
• the steering gear is worn out;
• the ball joints and suspension bushings are worn out.
