General description of suspension and steering (Peugeot 305)

Both front and rear suspension on the Peugeot 305 are independent. The front suspension struts are MacPherson struts and include dual-action telescopic shock absorbers and coil springs. The lower ends of the struts are connected to the lower suspension arms and the anti-roll bar. The front wheel bearings are located at the bottom of the struts. The front brake mounts, front suspension lower arm supports and the swing arm are also located here.

The rear suspension consists of 2 independent longitudinal arms that carry the rear wheel axles. The vertical movement of the wheels is controlled by telescopic shock absorbers and coil springs, and their independent movement is limited by an anti-roll bar.

The rack and pinion steering mechanism is located at the bottom of the engine compartment bulkhead, behind the transmission.

The work you can do on suspension and steering components yourself boils down to their removal, inspection, and replacement or installation, as their overhaul requires special tools. Before starting any work, you should carefully read the relevant section so you know what tools you will need.

Operating the steering wheel requires a certain amount of experience and great care. Use only approved or recommended fasteners and replace them with new ones whenever specified. All adjustments must be within the specified limits. If you are not sure that you can do the job yourself, it is better to entrust it to a specialist.
