The tie rod ends are a steel joint in a plastic shell. The joint is protected from dirt and moisture by a rubber cap, the condition of which must be checked during vehicle maintenance.
51. Make sure the rubber caps are not cracked. If the caps are cracked, the tie rod ends should be replaced. At the same time, the tips can be checked for play. This check is performed on a vehicle standing on its wheels by turning the steering wheel in one direction and the other. You can move the transverse steering rod to one side and then to the other. If the steering wheel has increased free play or the traction is given quite easily, then the tie rod ends should also be replaced.
In a similar manner, you can check the inner joints of the tie rod, which is quite difficult. If these joints are defective, then the entire tie rod must be replaced.
