- Remove piston rings using piston ring pliers (Figure 271). If the rings are to be re-installed, they should be marked accordingly. If you don't have piston ring pliers, you can remove the rings by sliding metal plates from opposite sides of the piston under the ring. To avoid scratches, place a plate under the ring joint.
- Remove both retaining rings from the piston pin hole. The rings do not have "ears" and require a small screwdriver to remove them.
- Place the piston with the connecting rod on a suitable support and knock the piston pin out of the piston and connecting rod. If the pin is tight, you can warm up the piston and connecting rod in hot water. Pull out the connecting rod.
Disassembly of pistons and connecting rods is performed only when replacing a piston or if a connecting rod is damaged.
