Table of contents: Removal 🠇 Refitting 🠇
Removal
1. The fluid cooler is mounted on the top of the transmission housing. To gain access to the fluid cooler, remove the air cleaner assembly and intake duct as described in the relevant Part of Chapter 4 and the battery as described in Chapter 5A. Where the transmission ECU is mounted adjacent to the battery, remove the ECU cover.
2. Using a hose clamp or similar, clamp both the heat exchanger coolant hoses to minimise coolant loss during subsequent operations.
3. Slacken the retaining clips and disconnect both coolant hoses from the heat exchanger -be prepared for some coolant spillage (see illustration). Wash off any spilt coolant immediately with cold water and dry the surrounding area before proceeding further.
6.3. Heat exchanger components 3. Heat exchanger; 4. Mounting bolts; 5. Inner copper washers; 6. Outer copper washers
4. Slacken and remove the two heat exchanger retaining bolts and recover the two copper washers from each bolt (one located on each side of the heat exchanger). Remove the unit from the transmission.
Refitting
5. Lubricate the new copper washers with clean automatic transmission fluid, then refit the heat exchanger. Ensure that the copper washers are fitted on each side of the heat exchanger and tighten the bolts securely.
6. Reconnect the coolant hoses to the fluid cooler and securely tighten their retaining clips. Remove the hose clamps.
7. Refit the battery, ECU cover and intake duct/air cleaner housing components.
8. On completion, top-up the cooling system (see "Weekly checks") and check the automatic transmission fluid level as described in Chapter 1A.
