External hinge
Removing
1. Remove the drive shaft.
2. Secure the drive shaft in a soft-jawed vise and remove the boot clamps.
3. Slide the protective cover down the shaft.
4. Using a hammer or soft drift, hit the pivot sharply and remove the pivot from the shaft.
5. Remove the circlip from the drive shaft groove. When installing the CV joint, a new retaining ring must be used.
6. Remove the rubber protective boot from the drive shaft.
7. Using an appropriate solvent, clean the CV joint and dry it. Inspect the hinge.
8. Check the movement of the hinge balls, as well as the balls themselves for damage.
9. Check the paths along which the balls of the hinge move on the inside and outside of the hinge.
10. If there is wear on any part of the hinge, the entire hinge must be replaced. If the hinge is in satisfactory condition, then it is necessary to use a repair kit consisting of a new protective cover, retaining ring, clamps and hinge grease.
Installation
1. plastic rings (photo on the left) located on the outer side of the protective cover. Slide the inside of the protective cover onto the shaft (indicated by the arrow in the photo on the right).
2. Install the inner end of the protective boot into the groove of the drive shaft or onto the plastic bushing (if used).
3. Install a new circlip into the groove on the end of the drive shaft.
4. Align the splines of the hinge and the drive shaft and install the hinge on the drive shaft until it is secured with a retaining ring.
5. Fill the joint with grease and install the protective boot in the joint groove.
6. Secure the protective cover with clamps using a hook and pliers.
7. Bend the protruding end of the clamp and cut off its excess part.
8. Fold the end of the clamp near the bracket.
9. Press the bracket against the clamp.
10. Lift the inner end of the protective boot to equalize the air pressure under the boot, then secure with a tie.
11. Check the smoothness of rotation of the CV joint and install the drive shaft on the car.
Internal hinge
1. Remove the drive shaft from the vehicle.
2. Secure the drive shaft in a soft-jawed vise and remove the boot clamps. Slide the protective cover down the shaft. Using a hammer or soft drift, hit the pivot sharply and remove the pivot from the shaft. Remove the circlip from the drive shaft groove. When installing the CV joint, a new retaining ring must be used.
3. Remove the protective cover of the outer hinge and, if installed, the plastic sleeve securing the inner end of the boot.
4. Remove the clamps securing the protective cover of the inner hinge and slide the protective cover along the shaft. Since the protective cover is removed, the outer part of the inner joint can be removed from the shaft.
5. Remove the plastic sleeve from the case.
6. Using a solvent, clean the hinge and dry it.
Examination
1. Check the inner hinge parts for wear. The support rollers must rotate smoothly and evenly.
2. If defects are found during the inspection of the inner joint, the entire drive shaft must be replaced.
3. Lubricate the working part of the inner hinge.
4. Clean the drive shaft of rust and sharp edges that could damage the protective boot when it is installed. Slide the inner joint boot onto the shaft until the boot fits into the groove.
5. Install the inner joint on the drive shaft and secure the protective cover in the grooves of the joint. Secure the protective cover with clamps.
6. Install the outer CV joint (see above).
