- remove the axle shaft;
- secure the axle shaft in a vice with soft jaws and remove the clamps securing the cover.
- slide the protective cover along the semiaxis;
- using a hammer or soft drift, hit the hinge sharply, thus removing the hinge from the retaining ring;
- remove the circlip from the shaft groove. When installing the CV joint, it is necessary to use a new retaining ring;
- remove the rubber protective cover from the axle shaft;
- using an appropriate solvent, clean the CV joint and dry it. Inspect the hinge;
- check the course of the hinge balls, as well as the balls for damage;
- check the paths along which the balls of the hinge move on the inner and outer parts of the hinge;
- if there is wear on any part of the hinge, the entire hinge must be replaced. If the hinge is in satisfactory condition, then it is necessary to use a repair kit of parts, consisting of a new protective cover, retaining ring, clamps and hinge lubricant;
Pic. 5.70. Installing a protective cover on the axle shaft
- put on the cover of the outer hinge, wrapping the splines of the axle shaft with adhesive tape to protect the cover (pic. 5.70);
Pic. 5.71. Installing a new retaining ring in the groove at the end of the axle shaft
- install a new retaining ring in the groove of the axle shaft (pic. 5.71);
Pic. 5.72. Installing the hinge on the axle shaft
- align the splines of the hinge and the axle shaft and install the hinge on the axle shaft until it is fixed with a retaining ring, hitting it sharply with a hammer (pic. 5.72);
Pic. 5.73. Filling the joint with grease
- fill the joint with grease, turning it so that the grease enters all the bearing raceways (pic. 5.73). Place the rest of the lubricant in the case;
- install the cover on the hinge so that the edges of the cover fit into the grooves of the axle shaft and the hinge. Secure the cover with clamps by first putting on the larger and then the smaller clamp;
- lift the inner end of the protective boot to equalize the air pressure under the boot, then secure with a tie. Cut off the excess protruding part of the clamp tape;
- check the smoothness of rotation of the CV joint and install the axle shaft on the car.
To replace the inner joint:
- remove the axle shaft from the car;
- remove the outer CV joint;
- remove the cover of the outer hinge, wrapping the splines of the axle shaft with adhesive tape to protect the cover;
Pic. 5.74. Removal of a protective cover of the internal hinge of a semiaxis
- remove the clamps securing the protective cover of the inner hinge and slide the protective cover along the semiaxis (pic. 5.74);
- paint or a hammer with a core, mark the position of the inner hinge relative to the axle shaft. Remove the circlip securing the CV joint to the axle shaft;
- using a puller, remove the CV joint from the axle shaft. Place the puller grips on the back of the hinge;
- using a solvent, clean the hinge and dry it;
- check the inner joint parts for wear. The support rollers must rotate smoothly and evenly;
- if defects are found when checking the internal hinge, then it is necessary to replace the entire axle shaft;
- lubricate the working part of the inner hinge;
- using sandpaper, clean the axle shaft from rust and sharp edges that can damage the protective cover when installing it;
- slide the protective cover of the inner hinge onto the axle shaft;
- install the inner hinge on the axle shaft and fix the protective cover in the grooves of the hinge.
- lift the inner end of the protective cover to equalize the air pressure under the cover;
- secure the protective cover with clamps;
- install the outer CV joint as described above. Replace the outer hinge boot, regardless of its condition. Upon completion, check the freedom of movement of both hinges in all directions.
