17.1.1. Removal and installation
The drive gear of a turbodiesel engine and a diesel engine of this type are not the same, this should be taken into account when replacing the oil pump.
Removing the oil pump can be done without removing the engine:
- Raise the front of the vehicle or, if possible, drive it onto a ramp or place the front wheels on a lifting ramp.
- Place a suitable container under the oil pan and drain the oil from the engine. To drain completely, the oil must be at least warm.
- Unscrew the muffler pipe from the exhaust manifold flange and release the pipe from the rear side from the mount on the bridge.
- Loosen the oil pan mounting bolts around the circumference and lower the oil pan down. Carefully tap the stuck oil pan with a rubber hammer; do not insert a screwdriver between the contact surfaces.
- Remove the oil pump according to the instructions in the engine disassembly section.
If the oil pump is removed due to low oil pressure, it is better to install a new pump, since the pump body and gears are most likely worn out.
If necessary, the pump can be disassembled into the parts shown in Figure 279 as follows:
- Unscrew the oil intake screen from the pump body.
- Remove the parts shown in Figure 279 from the pump.
- Carefully check the condition of the pump gears. One of the gears may be removed from the shaft. The other gear is hot pressed onto the shaft. If one of the gears has increased wear, the other gear is also replaced.

Check the safety valve piston and piston springs for wear and damage. Replace parts if necessary.
The oil pump is assembled in reverse order. Generously lubricate the inside of the pump with engine oil and install the oil pickup screen. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 7 Nm.
Before installing the oil pump, thoroughly clean the contact surface of the crankcase, but without using a sharp tool.
Install the pump in the correct position while putting on the chain. To do this, tilt the pump slightly to insert the sprocket into the chain, and then place the pump on the centering sleeve. Install three bolts and tighten them evenly to a torque of 8 Nm.
Cover the contact surface of the oil pan with sealing compound and install the oil pan. Check if the oil drain plug is tightened (tightening torque 30 Nm) and pour the required amount of oil into the engine.
Start the engine and let it run for a while. Check for leaks in the oil pan area. In addition, after some time, check the oil level in the engine and, if necessary, adjust it by adding oil.
