- Start the engine and let it run at idle speed.
- Press the clutch pedal and wait for about 3 seconds.
- Engage reverse gear. If a grinding noise is heard in the gearbox, it can be assumed that the clutch or driven disk needs to be replaced, since the connection between the clutch and the flywheel is broken.
To check for clutch slippage:
- Drive the car until the gearbox and clutch warm up to operating temperature.
- Stop the car and apply the handbrake.
- Engage third gear.
- Press the clutch pedal, increase engine speed to 3000 - 4000 rpm and quickly release the clutch pedal. The clutch is functioning normally if the engine stalls immediately.
When the clutch has already had a significant mileage, it gradually begins to feel like the clutch is slipping. In this case, you should first check its adjustment. Clutch slippage may also occur when driving uphill. If when you give it gas it seems like the engine is spinning faster than it feels like the car is moving, it means the engine is spinning faster than the clutch engagement.
When the clutch slips, the engine torque is not fully transmitted to the transmission. In this case, the driven clutch disc is not clamped tightly enough between the working surfaces of the flywheel and the driving disc. In most cases, it can be assumed that oil from the engine or gearbox has gotten onto the clutch linings, or the clutch linings are burnt or worn out. The only solution is to replace the driven disc or, in most cases, the entire clutch.
