Removal
1. Chock the front wheels then jack up the rear of the vehicle and support it on axle stands (see "Jacking and vehicle support"). Working under the vehicle, slacken the adjuster nut on the cable equaliser assembly until the rear handbrake cables can be disengaged from the equaliser plate.
2. If desired, to improve access, remove the front seats as described in Chapter 11. Working inside the vehicle, pull the carpet panel back for access to the two handbrake lever securing bolts (see illustration).
18.2. Handbrake lever securing bolts (arrowed)
3. Unscrew the securing bolts, then lift the lever assembly from the floor. Disengage the cable grommet from the floor, then feed the front section of the cable/rod through into the passenger compartment and withdraw the assembly from the vehicle.
Refitting
4. Refitting is a reversal of removal. Ensure that the cable grommet is correctly located in the aperture in the floor and on completion, adjust the handbrake mechanism as described in Chapter 1A or 1B.
