Handbrake cables — removal and refitting (Peugeot 106)

Front cable/rod

1. The front cable or rod is integral with the handbrake lever assembly and must be removed complete with the lever assembly, as described in Section 18. The cable/rod cannot be renewed individually and if faulty, the complete lever assembly must be renewed.

Rear cables

Removal

2. Chock the front wheels then jack up the rear of the vehicle and support it on axle stands (see "Jacking and vehicle support"). Remove the relevant rear roadwheel.

3. Working under the vehicle, slacken the adjuster nut on the cable equaliser assembly until the handbrake rear cables can be disengaged from the equaliser plate.

4. Remove the brake drum as described in Section 9.

5. Remove the trailing brake shoe and unhook the end of the handbrake cable from the shoe, as described in Section 6.

6. Feed the cable through the rear brake backplate. If necessary, prise the cable outer from the backplate (see illustration).



7. Unhook the cable from the clips and brackets under the vehicle (see illustrations), noting the cable routing, then withdraw the cable from the vehicle. Note that on certain models, it may be necessary to lower the exhaust heat shield to allow the cable to be removed.

Refitting

8. Attach the cable to the brackets and clips under the rear of the vehicle, ensuring that it is routed as noted before removal.

9. Feed the cable through the rear brake backplate (if necessary, tap the cable outer into position in the backplate), then hook the end of the cable onto the trailing brake shoe and refit the shoe as described in Section 6.

10. Refit the brake drum as described in Section 9.

11. Refit the rear wheelf.

12. Reconnect the front of the cable to the equaliser plate, then adjust the handbrake as described in Chapter 1A or 1B.

13. On completion, lower the vehicle to the ground.
