Removing
1. Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands. Remove the corresponding rear wheel.
2. Remove the screws securing the brake drum to the hub.
3. Check that the handbrake is fully released and remove the brake drum from the vehicle. The drum may be difficult to remove from the hub due to corrosion of the hub or due to the fact that it is held by the brake pads. In the first case, to remove the drum from the hub, tap on the perimeter of the drum with a plastic hammer or a wooden mallet. In the second case, make sure the handbrake is fully released and follow the steps below.
4. Fully loosen the handbrake cable adjuster to get maximum deflection in the cable. Remove the cork (A) from the back of the brake shield (cork is usually stained blue) and, using a screwdriver, move the handbrake lever to the brake shoe until it stops. This will allow the brake shoes to move away from the brake drum, with the result that the drum can be easily removed from the hub.
Examination
1. Be careful to clean the inside of the brake drum of brake dust and dirt.
2. Clean the outer surface of the brake drum and check for obvious signs of wear or damage, cracks around the wheel bolt holes. Replace drum if necessary.
3. Check the inside of the brake drum. Slight wear of the drum from the action of the pads is normal.
4. Measure the inner working surface of the drum in several places. Compare the results of the obtained measurements. If the results differ from each other, then the drum has an oval shape. If the measured maximum inner diameter of the drum is within acceptable limits, then it must be reground. If the drum wear exceeds the allowable limits, it is necessary to replace the brake drums on both rear wheels.
Installation
1. When installing a new brake drum, use a solvent to remove the protective film from it. If necessary, reduce the length of the brake pad adjuster bar by turning the bar adjuster wheel.
2. Check that the handbrake lever is set against the edge of the brake shoe and that the brake drum and hub running surfaces are clean and dry.
3. Install the brake drum on the hub and secure with screws, tightening them to the required torque.
4. Depress the brake pedal several times to activate the brake pad clearance adjustment mechanism.
5. Adjust the handbrake cable.
6. Install the wheel and lower the car.
