Power is supplied to the glow plugs when the ignition key is turned to the preheat position. The supply voltage is at least 11.5 volts, and the glow plugs heat up to a temperature of approximately 150°C within a few seconds. Preheating time depends on engine temperature and ranges from 25 seconds for a cold engine to 2 seconds in the summer months. If the engine does not start immediately, the power is removed and when the ignition key is turned to the preheat position, the preheating system is turned on again.
There are cases of glow plugs burning out due to high temperatures. Glow plugs can fail due to a faulty injector, incorrectly set fuel injection timing, or low fuel pressure. When replacing, be sure to install glow plugs of the correct type.
The candles are placed in the places indicated on figure 367. To remove, unscrew the nuts from the spark plugs and unscrew the desired spark plug. The best tool for removing glow plugs is a socket wrench with an extension. The spark plugs are tightened to a torque of 28 Nm.
Different glow plugs are installed: either Beru or Bosch, depending on the type and year of manufacture of the engine. When purchasing new spark plugs, be sure to indicate the year of manufacture and engine number.
