- With the vehicle on the ground, loosen the front drive shaft nuts on both sides.
- Disconnect the ground wire from the battery.
- Remove the following parts in sequence: spare tire, air filter and, if installed, vacuum pump.
- Loosen the upper gearbox-to-engine mounting bolts. There is a stand installed under one of the bolts.
- Unscrew the ground jumper on the side of the gearbox.
- Disconnect the cable connector from the reverse light switch.
- Disconnect the shift mechanism from the gearbox.
- Unscrew the four bolts securing the left gearbox mount and remove the mount.
- Raise the front of the vehicle and place it on stands. For the following work, follow the section "Front wheel suspension".
- Completely unscrew the left strut mount bracket from the body or release the strut by unscrewing the nuts. On the same side, unscrew the transverse arm either from the steering knuckle or from the inner side.
- Disengage the left drive shaft from the gearbox as described in section 9.1.
- Remove the gearbox mount from the same side.
- Disconnect the clutch cable from the release lever and disconnect it from the gearbox.
- On the right side, completely unscrew the ball joint from the bottom of the steering knuckle and press the wishbone down.
- Disengage the right drive shaft from the gearbox as described in section 9.1.
- Remove the starter cover, disconnect the wires from the starter and remove the starter.
- Raise the engine appropriately, either with cables or chains and a pulley block, or by placing a powerful garage jack under the engine. To lift the gearbox, you will need a second jack (a hydraulic jack would be useful here).
- Remove the oil dipstick from the gearbox (to avoid damaging it when removing the box).
- Support the gearbox with a jack so that the entire power unit is securely held. After this, unscrew the last bolt of the left gearbox mount.
- Lower the transmission onto the jack so that the engine is supported by the lifting device.
- On a gasoline engine, remove the top dead center sensor.
- Remove the left suspension and unscrew the gearbox mounting bolts from the bottom of the engine.
- After this, you can pull out the gearbox. At the same time, do not apply any weight load to the clutch shaft, so as not to bend it and damage the driven clutch disc.
The gearbox is installed in reverse order. Lubricate the splined portion of the clutch shaft, the release bearing guide sleeve and the pressure levers of the clutch release mechanism with graphite grease. Carefully center the gearbox mounts, as well as the unscrewed wishbone.
- If the oil has been drained from the gearbox, add oil to the gearbox. To fill the oil, it is best to unscrew the reverse light switch so that you can insert a funnel.
8.1.1. All-wheel drive vehicles
Removing the gearbox is done in a similar manner, with the difference that in order to pull out the gearbox, it is necessary to remove the drive shafts.
