Elements of a hand brake

The handbrake cable consists of 3 parts: the front part, which includes the adjustment mechanism, the right and left rear parts, which connect the rear brakes to the adjustment mechanism on the front cable. Each part can be removed separately.
Front handbrake cable
Removal and installation
1. Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands.
2. Under the vehicle, remove the intermediate link of the exhaust system and the heat shield.
3. Loosen the locknut, unscrew the adjuster nut to loosen the handbrake cable as much as possible.
4. Release the front cable clips under the vehicle, then disconnect the cable from the right cable at the cable connector and from the governor hanger.
5. Working under the handbrake lever, disconnect the cable from the lever setting plate.
6. On conventional center console models, tighten the handbrake lever, and remove the handbrake trim from the top of the center console.
7. Remove the trim on the handbrake lever.
8. On models with enhanced center console, remove the center console.
9. Raise the handbrake lever to the fifth click to access the end of the cable.
10. Move the cable forward and remove it from the ledge on the lever.
11. Pull the cable down through the lever setting plate, and remove it from under the vehicle.
12. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
13. Check and, if necessary, adjust the operation of the hand brake.
Rear handbrake cable on drum brakes
Removal and installation
1. Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands.
2. Under the vehicle, remove the intermediate link of the exhaust system and the heat shield.
3. Loosen the locknut on the regulator mechanism and unscrew the regulator nut.
4. When removing the left cable, unscrew the adjuster nut from the end of the threaded bushing, and disconnect the end of the cable from the adjuster hanger.
5. When removing the right cable, disconnect the right cable from the cable at the cable connector.
6. Remove the appropriate brake drum.
7. Using pliers, disconnect the end of the handbrake cable from the control lever on the brake shoe.
8. Remove the cable sheath from the brake shield.
9. Release the entire length of the cable from the fastening brackets and remove from under the car.
10. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
11. Check and, if necessary, adjust the operation of the hand brake.
Rear handbrake cable on disc brakes
1. Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands.
2. Under the vehicle, remove the intermediate link of the exhaust system and the heat shield.
3. Loosen the locknut on the regulator mechanism and unscrew the regulator nut.
4. When removing the left cable, unscrew the adjuster nut from the end of the threaded bushing, and disconnect the end of the cable from the adjuster hanger.
5. When removing the right cable, disconnect the right cable from the cable at the cable connector.
6. Disconnect the cable from the control lever on the caliper, then disconnect the cable sheath from the caliper hanger.
7. Release the entire length of the cable from the fastening brackets and remove from under the car.
8. Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal.
9. Check and, if necessary, adjust the operation of the hand brake.
