Models with rear drum brakes
1. To check the handbrake adjustment, fully release it, depress the brake pedal several times to set the normal operating clearance between the brake pads and the drum, apply the handbrake several times to properly set the automatic handbrake adjustment mechanism.
2. To check that the handbrake is adjusted correctly, tighten the handbrake lever all the way and count the number of clicks, which should be 10-11. If the number of clicks differs from the specified, it is necessary to adjust as follows.
3. Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands.
4. To access the handbrake adjuster, unscrew the nuts and bolts and remove the heat shield.
5. Fully release the handbrake lever, loosen the locknut.
6. Turn the adjuster on the left front side of the mechanism to set the clearance (indicated by an arrow) 0.5-1mm between front and right rear cable. Tighten locknut.
7. Check handbrake adjustment by counting the number of lever clicks.
8. Install the heat shield and lower the vehicle.
Models with rear disc brakes
1. Fully tighten the handbrake lever to check the handbrake adjustment.
2. Count the number of clicks of the ratchet. With a properly adjusted handbrake, full tightening occurs at 6-7 clicks.
Brake pad adjustment
1. Raise the rear of the car and secure it on stands. Remove both rear wheels. Using pliers, remove the plug from the front of the brake disc that exposes the brake adjuster.
2. Rotate the brake disc to position the adjustment hole opposite the handbrake pad adjuster.
3. Make sure the handbrake is fully released, then insert a screwdriver through the adjustment hole and fully depress the handbrake pads by turning the adjusting ring.
4. After the disc is completely braked by the brake pads, turn the adjusting ring in the opposite direction by 5-6 teeth, as a result of which the brake disc should rotate freely.
5. Install the plug that covers the adjusting hole in the brake disc.
6. Repeat the steps to adjust the brake pad clearance on the second wheel.
7. Install the wheels and adjust the handbrake cable.
