Speedometer drive sensor installed on ML5T transmission
Removal
1. Raise the front of the vehicle and secure it on stands. Remove the splash guard from under the engine. The speedometer drive sensor is located on the rear of the gearbox housing near the inner end of the right drive shaft. Depending on the model, the speedometer drive may be cable or electrical.
2. On models with a cable-operated speedometer, remove the pin and remove the speedometer cable. On models with an electric speedometer, disconnect the electrical connector.
3. Unscrew the mounting bolt together with the heat shield (where is there).
4. Remove the speedometer drive sensor or speedometer drive gear assembly from the transmission housing together with the O-ring.
5. If necessary, the gear can be removed from the housing and then the sealing ring on the top of the housing can be replaced. Check the gear for wear and replace if necessary.
6. If the driven gear is worn or damaged, the pinion gear in the transmission housing must be examined.
7. To remove the speedometer drive pinion on the BE3 gearbox, remove the right drive shaft from the gearbox. Unscrew the three mounting bolts.
8. Then remove the speedometer drive housing together with the O-ring. Remove the pinion gear from the differential together with the adjusting shims.
Installation

1. Install the adjusting shims onto the differential, then the speedometer drive pinion, aligning the mounting tabs (indicated by arrows). Install a new O-ring on the back of the speedometer drive housing, then install the housing in place and tighten the bolts. Install the drive shaft.
2. Lubricate the sealing lips and the pinion driven shaft and install the pinion into the speedometer drive housing.
3. Install a new O-ring onto the speedometer drive housing. Install the assembly onto the transmission.
4. Install the heat shield and secure with the bolt.
5. On models with an electric speedometer drive, connect the electrical connector. On models with a cable drive speedometer, connect the speedometer drive cable.
6. Place a splash guard under the engine and lower the vehicle.
