The Peugeot 605 is equipped with a four-speed automatic transmission (see illustration 1.0), the main elements of which are the torque converter and the electronic control unit of the gearbox. The electronic unit includes the appropriate gear depending on the speed of movement and the load on the engine. Torque from the engine to the gearbox is transmitted through the torque converter.

1 - identification number plate
A - serial number
B - ZF modification (last 3 digits)
C - equipment code
D - gearbox designation

Depending on the configuration, the automatic transmission may be produced without a rod indicator 1 of the transmission oil level (dipstick) (see illustration 1.0a). The assembly code changes.

1 - transmission oil level indicator rod (dipstick)
2 - inspection hole plug
3 - filler plug
4 - assembly code:
Automatic transmission with dipstick - 20HZG3
Automatic transmission without dipstick - 20HZ15

The gearbox is controlled by a lever with 7 positions - P, R, N, D, 3, 2, 1 - (see illustration 1.0b):

[Information posted on the website PeugeotBook.ru]
  • "P" - parking position;
  • "R" - position that enables selection of reverse gear;
  • "N" - neutral position;
  • "D" - position providing automatic gear selection from all four gears;
  • "3" - position providing selection of gears from 1st, 2nd and 3rd;
  • "2" - position that provides gear selection only from 1st and 2nd;
  • "7" - position that provides selection of only 1st gear.

The engine can only be started when the gearshift lever is in position "P" or "N", which prevents accidental movement of the vehicle when trying to start the engine.

The switch allows you to select one of three SPORT modes (sport mode: the engine runs at high speeds, giving faster acceleration and generating more power), ECO (for driving in normal conditions. The engine operates at relatively low speeds, which allows for sufficient power and fuel savings), SNOW (for driving on mud and snow). When the accelerator pedal is fully depressed, the "kick down" switch is activated and the gearbox shifts to a lower gear, which allows for high torque for acceleration.

In case of malfunctions of the automatic transmission, a signal lamp lights up on the instrument panel. In this case, the choice of gears is possible only from two forward gears and a reverse gear, which are switched mechanically.

Please note: Due to the complexity of the automatic transmission, any repairs are recommended to be carried out in a specialized workshop.
