Checking the drive axle shaft covers (Peugeot Partner I)

1 Raise the vehicle and place secure supports underneath it (see "Lifting and installing the car on supports"). Turn the steering wheel all the way to one side and then the other, one at a time, and slowly turn each front wheel. Inspect the rubber boots of the outer constant velocity joints by pushing apart their bellows to expose the recesses (figure 6.1). Check for cuts, cracks, or other damage that could allow grease to leak and allow water and sand to enter the joint. Also check the reliability of the fastening and the condition of the clamps. Repeat these checks on the inner constant velocity joints. If damage or deterioration is detected, the covers should be replaced as described in chapter 8.



2. At the same time, check the general condition of the outer CV joints themselves by first holding the axle shaft and trying to rotate the wheel. Repeat this test on the inner joints by holding the joint and trying to rotate the axle shaft. Any noticeable movement is a sign of wear on the joints, axle shaft splines, or loose axle shaft nut tightening.
