Depending on the engine type, the car is equipped with a corresponding gearbox. As changes were made to the corresponding car model, the gearbox also underwent corresponding changes.

When equipped with a 1.8-liter or 2.0-liter 8-valve engine, a VEZ/5 gearbox was installed. This was the case, for example, in the CITROEN XM. Over time, the gearbox may fail and need to be replaced. In this case, you need to know where on the box the factory plate with the number is located (see illustration 1.0).

This plate indicates the serial number, which begins with the letters "CL" or "CM." Since 1998, the transmission serial number has begun with the letters "TA," and this transmission is used with 2.0-liter engines.

2.0-liter turbocharged engines were initially equipped with the ME5K gearbox (see illustration 1.0a).

Since 1998, this model has been replaced by the ML5E gearbox. This model's serial number begins with the number "20.".

The 1.9-liter diesel engine was also initially equipped with the ME5K transmission. Beginning in 1997, these engines were also equipped with the ML5E transmission. A little later, in 1997, this diesel engine became equipped with the ML5T transmission (see illustration 1.0b).

The corresponding factory plates are located on these boxes in two places (see illustration 1.0b). At point number 1 is a sticker indicating the transmission type and serial number (the serial number begins with "20"). At point number 2 is a plate engraved with the transmission type and serial number. The drain and filler plugs on this type of gearbox are shown in (illustrations 1.0v.)

As for the 2.1-liter diesel engine, it was equipped with the ML5E gearbox until 1997. Since 1997, it has been installed with the ML5T gearbox (see illustration 1.0b).

On cars with a 2.0 liter, 16-valve engine, a gearbox designated ML5 is installed, which is generally identical to the above-mentioned gearboxes with the same designation.

The main gear is located under the gearbox shafts. The driven gear of the main transmission is driven by a bevel gear on the secondary shaft. This is a shaft with synchronizing gears and freely rotating clutches for engaging gears. The second shaft is the primary shaft. The tail of this shaft with V-shaped splines enters the hole in the driven clutch disc.

The information provided applies to the gearbox installed in CITROËN vehicles. Gearboxes installed in other vehicle models may differ in some respects.
