When the car was equipped with a 1.8-liter or 2.0-liter engine with 8 valves, a VEZ / 5 model gearbox was installed. In this way, for example, CITROEN XM cars were equipped. As the vehicle is used, the transmission may fail and need to be replaced. In this case, you need to know where the nameplate with the number is located on the box (see illustration 1.0).
1.0 Location of the serial number plate on the gearbox. VUZ/5 gearbox shown
This plate shows the serial number beginning with the letters «CL» or «CM». Since 1998, the serial number of the box begins with the letters «TA» and this box is equipped with 2.0 liter engines.
2.0 liter engines with a gas turbine supercharger were originally equipped with a ME5K gearbox (see illustration 1.0a).
1.0a Transmission model ME5K
Since 1998, the ML5E gearbox has been installed instead of this model. The serial number of this model starts with a number «20».
The 1.9-liter diesel engine was also originally equipped with a ME5K gearbox. Since 1997, the ML5E gearbox has been installed on these engines as well. A little later in the same 1997, this diesel engine was equipped with an ML5T gearbox (see illustration 1.0b).

2 - nameplate with engraved code and serial number
Appropriate nameplates are located on these boxes in two places (see illustration 1.0b). At point number 1 is a sticker indicating the type and serial number of the box (serial number starts with a number «20»). At the point marked with the number 2 there is a plate engraved with the type and serial number of the gearbox. Drain and filler plugs on this type of gearbox are shown in (illustrations 1.0v.)

As for the 2.1-liter diesel engine, until 1997 it was equipped with an ML5E gearbox. Since 1997, it has been installed with the ML5T gearbox (see illustration 1.0b).
On vehicles with a 2.0 liter engine and 16 valves, a gearbox is installed, designated ML5, which is generally identical to the above gearboxes with an identical designation.
The main gear is located under the gearbox shafts. The final drive gear is driven by a bevel gear on the output shaft. This is a shaft with synchronizing gears and freely rotating gear clutches. The second shaft is the input shaft. The shank of this shaft with wedge-shaped splines enters the hole in the clutch disc.
The information given is given in relation to the gearbox installed on CITROEN vehicles. Gearboxes installed on other car models may differ somewhat.
