1. When the engine is cold (at least an hour after driving) check the entire exhaust system, from the engine to the end of the exhaust pipe. If necessary, to facilitate the inspection, raise the vehicle using a lift or lift it and place secure supports underneath it (see "Lifting and installing the car on supports"). Then the exhaust system elements will be visible and accessible.
2. Check the exhaust pipes and their connections for signs of leaks, severe corrosion and damage. Ensure that all brackets and supports are in good condition and all associated nuts and bolts are securely tightened. Leaks in any of the connections or other parts of the system will usually show up as a black, sooty coating in the immediate vicinity of the leak.
3. The exhaust system, especially the brackets and supports, is often the source of rattling and other noises. Try to wiggle the pipes and mufflers. If the components may come into contact with the body or suspension components, secure the system with new supports. Otherwise, disconnect the connections(if possible) and rotate the pipes to provide additional clearance.
