On some engines, the top and bottom halves of the bearings were the same thickness.

On later engines, the working clearance of the bearings was significantly reduced, and in order to meet this condition, 4 different liners are used, which are designated by a color mark on the end. The color of the mark indicates the thickness of the liners. The upper liners on all bearings have the same size, and the working clearance is adjusted by installing the lower liners of the required thickness.

On later engines, new bearings can be selected using the marks on the cylinder block. If there are no marks, bearings can only be selected by measuring the running clearance. The cylinder block marks are on the left side of the block, and the crankshaft marks are on the end of the crankshaft web. These marks can be used to select the correct bearing thickness as follows.

There are two identification lines on the crankshaft and cylinder block: a bar code, which is used by Peugeot in production, and a series of five designations. The first designation in the sequence refers to the size of the first bearing number. The last designation in the sequence (which is accompanied by an arrow) refer to the size of the number of the fifth insert.

Determine the designation number from a specific crankshaft journal and cylinder block bearing bore.

On the upper axis of the nomogram, mark the crankshaft designation and draw a vertical line through this point. On the left vertical axis of the nomogram, mark the cylinder block designation and draw a horizontal line through this point. The intersection point of the lines indicates the size of the liner to ensure the required clearance.

For example, the nomogram shows that the crankshaft indicates 6 and the cylinder block indicates H, the intersection point within the red area determines that red (Class D) is the most suitable for obtaining the required clearance.

Repeat this operation to select the bearings for the remaining crankshaft main journals.

Diesel engine XUD series

On diesel engines, the upper and lower bearing shells are the same thickness.
