1. To check the parking brake adjustment, first fully depress the brake pedal several times to set the correct clearance between the brake shoes and the drum, and then tighten and release the parking brake several times to fully adjust the self-adjusting mechanism. Using normal, medium force, fully engage the parking brake while counting the number of clicks on the ratchet. If the brake is adjusted correctly, the parking brake should be fully engaged after at least five clicks of the ratchet. If adjustment is required, proceed as described below.

2. To gain access to the parking brake adjuster nut, remove the rear section of the center console as described in chapter 11.

3. Place wheel chocks under the front wheels. Raise the rear of the vehicle and place secure supports underneath it (see "Lifting and installing the car on supports").

4. Apply and tighten the parking brake four times.

5. After applying the parking brake to the fifth click of the ratchet, check that both rear wheels are locked. If they are not locked, tighten the parking brake adjusting nut until both rear wheels are locked (figure 13.5). After this, fully release the parking brake lever and make sure that the rear wheels rotate freely. Check the adjustment by fully applying the parking brake and counting the number of clicks of the parking brake ratchet. Repeat adjustment if necessary.

6. Once the correct adjustment is achieved, install the center console and then lower the vehicle.
