1) clamp the steering mechanism in a vice with soft lining;

2) remove clamps 2 and 3 (pic. 8.36);
3) remove the mudguard 1;
4) place the steering rack in the middle position;
5) remove the plastic cap from the adjusting bolt 1 (see figure 8.14);
Pic. 8.37. Installing the Steering Gear Clearance Checker: 1 - dial indicator; 2 - fixture; 3 - bolts
6) set indicator 1 (pic. 8.37) clock type with fixture 2 on the steering gear;
7) tighten bolts 3 by hand;

Pic. 8.39. Determination of clearance in the steering mechanism: 1 - adjusting bolt; 2 - rail; 3 - spring
8) wrench 2 (pic. 8.38) turn rail 2 as far as it will go (pic. 8.39), so that the spring 3 rests against the adjusting bolt 1;
Attention! Make sure that the indicator leg moves freely.
9) in this position, set the indicator arrow to zero;
10) watching the indicator, turn the stem 1 (see fig. 8.38) valve half a turn when the rail is in the middle position;
11) mark the obtained gap value A, which should be 0.01-0.1 mm;
12) if the value is not correct, remove tools 1 and 2 (see fig. 8.37) and adjust the gap of the guide spring;
13) if the gap value is correct, check the gap at other rack positions, the gap should be 0.01-0.15 mm;
14) if the clearance does not correspond to these values, then the steering gear should be replaced;
15) if the gap corresponds to these values, then the following must be done:
- remove tools 1 and 2 (see fig. 8.37);
Pic. 8.14. Gear rack support fastening: 1 - bolt; 2 - spring; 3 - sealing ring
- replace the plastic cap and tighten the adjusting bolt 1 (see fig. 8.14);
- reinstall the dust cover 1 (see fig. 8.36) and tighten clamps 2 and 3.
Adjust the steering mechanism in the following order:
Power Steering
- tighten adjusting bolt 1 (see fig. 8.14) torque 20 Nm;
Steering without hydraulic booster
- tighten the adjusting bolt 1 to 15 Nm;
Both types
Pic. 8.40. Steering clearance adjustment: 1 - adjusting bolt; A - label
- set mark A (pic. 8.40) on the steering gear housing so that it coincides with the graduated adjusting bolt 1;
Power Steering
- unscrew bolt 1 by three divisions;
Steering without hydraulic booster
- unscrew bolt 1 by two divisions;
Both types
1) check clearance A (see fig. 8.39);
2) If, after the first adjustment, clearance A does not correspond to the required values, proceed as follows:
- tighten or loosen the adjusting bolt 1 by a few notches (see fig. 8.14) (tighten to reduce clearance, loosen to increase clearance);
- check clearance A;
- repeat the last operation until you achieve gap A equal to 0.01-0.1 mm.
