2. Install the car on a pit or on a flyover. If this is not possible, jack up and support the back of the car. Block the front wheels and put the car into gear.
3. Seal the opening of the brake reservoir (see chapter 8). Disconnect the brake pipes in the most convenient places in front of the rear axle (disconnection locations vary depending on the type of brake compensator installed). Where necessary, remove the tubes from the clamps on the rear axle structure so that the axle can be removed. Plug the open ends of the tubes to prevent dirt from entering the system.
4. Remove the rear section of the exhaust system by disconnecting it at the spring connection (where available).
5. Working in the cabin, remove the cover over the hand brake mechanism and remove the lever bracket from the floor. Loosen the adjusting bushings of the handbrake cables and disconnect the cables from the lever.
6. Remove the rear seat in order to get to the mounting nuts of the rear cross. Remove three nuts and washers on each side.
7. Working under the machine, pull the handbrake cables through the floor. Jack up the car and place a piece of wood 120 mm thick under each rear wheel. Lower the machine onto these bars in order to release the cross studs (three on each side).
8. Carefully raise the rear of the machine, making sure that the rear wheels do not come off the bars and at the same time the rear springs are fully extended. Bend back tabs on lock plates and remove 2 bolts at lower ends of rear struts securing them to trailing arms.
9. Pull out the bars from under the wheels and, lifting the rear of the machine, remove the rear axle assembly. Check that the machine is still securely supported.
10. The rear axle is installed in the reverse order. Pay attention to the following points:
- A. Install on rear cross studs (three on each side) b new Nylstop nuts with regular washers and tighten them to the correct torque.
- b. After the machine is lowered onto the wheels, tighten the 4 bolts securing the rear struts to the trailing arms to the required torque and lock them. The locking plates on the bolts must be replaced with new ones.
- V. Adjust the handbrake and bleed the brake system (see chapter 8).
- d. When installing the rear section of the exhaust system, tighten the nuts and bolts of the spring connection (where provided) so as to compress the spring by 3 mm. Then tighten the locknuts.
