A glow plug is installed in each vortex chamber. Glow plugs are used when starting a cold engine. The glow plugs are powered by the preheater. On engines 1.9 l (WJZ) the control unit processes the signals from the coolant temperature sensors and the position of the injection pump lever. On engines 1.9 l (WJY) the latest releases, as well as on 2.0 liter engines, the preheating unit is controlled by the fuel injection system.
After starting the engine, the glow plugs continue to work for some time. Preheating is indicated to the driver by a warning lamp in the instrument cluster. If the lamp goes out, then the engine is ready to start. The power to the candles continues to be supplied for a few more seconds after the light goes out. If at this time there were no attempts to start the engine, the timer will turn off the power to the glow plugs to prevent the battery from discharging and overheating the glow plugs.
