Removal
1. Disconnect the ground cable from the battery (see "Disconnecting the battery").
2. On 1.9L DW series diesel engines, loosen the clamp in the center of the engine cover and remove the mounting screw on the right side. Remove the engine cover. On 2.0L diesel engines, rotate the four plastic fasteners 90° and remove the engine cover (Figure 8.3, a-d).
3. To gain access to the motor from above and below, apply the parking brake, raise the front of the vehicle and place a secure support underneath it (see "Lifting and installing the car on supports"). Loosen the screws and remove the engine protection (if applicable).
4. Remove the air cleaner assembly and air intake ducts as described in chapter 4A.
5. Remove the two nuts and disconnect the wiring from the starter solenoid valve. Remove the washers from under the nuts.
6. Remove three bolts (two on the rear of the electric motor and one accessible through the top of the gearbox housing), supporting the electric motor while unscrewing the bolts (figure 11.6). Remove the washers from under the bolt heads and mark the location of the wiring or hose brackets secured with the bolts.
