Rear drum brake models
1. The rear hub is integral with the brake drum. Refer to Chapter 9 for details of brake drum removal and refitting.

Note: Do not remove the hub assembly unless it is absolutely necessary. A puller will be required to draw the hub assembly off the stub axle and the hub bearing will be damaged by the removal procedure. As the bearing is not available separately, it will be necessary to obtain a complete new rear hub assembly prior to refitting. A new hub nut and a new hub cap will also be required.
Removal
2. Remove the rear brake disc as described in Chapter 9.
3. Using a hammer and a large flat-bladed screwdriver, carefully tap and prise the cap out of the centre of the hub. Discard the cap -a new one must be used on refitting. Using a hammer and a chisel-nosed tool, tap up the staking securing the hub retaining nut to the groove in the stub axle.
4. Using a socket and long bar, slacken and remove the rear hub nut and withdraw the thrustwasher. Discard the hub nut - a new nut must used on refitting.

5. Using a puller, draw the hub assembly off the stub axle, along with the outer bearing race. With the hub removed, use the puller to draw the inner bearing race off the stub axle, then remove the hub spacer, noting which way around it is fitted.
6. The bearing must be renewed as a matter of course as it will have been damaged during removal. This means that the complete hub assembly must be renewed, since it is not possible to obtain the bearing separately.
7. Examine the stub axle shaft for signs of wear or damage. The shaft is an integral part of the trailing arm and if worn or damaged, the complete trailing arm must be renewed. Refer to Section 9 for further details.
Refitting
8. Lubricate the stub axle shaft with clean engine oil, then slide on the spacer, ensuring it is fitted the correct way round.
9. Slide the hub assembly onto the stub axle and tap it into position using a hammer and tubular drift in contact with the bearing inner race. Once sufficient thread is exposed on the stub axle, the old hub nut can be used to draw the hub assembly fully into position.
10. Remove the old hub nut and lightly grease the face and threads of the new hub nut Fit the thrustwasher and new hub nut and tighten the nut to the specified torque. Stake the nut firmly into the groove on the stub axle to secure it in position, then tap the new hub cap into place in the centre of the hub.
11. Refit the rear brake disc (see Chapter 9).
