Removal the cylinder head (Peugeot 405)

This operation requires partial removal of the timing belt.

1. Secure the right upper engine mount, and then remove the engine support fixture (this does not apply to the XUD 7TE engine).

2. Remove the air filter, its connections, injection pipes and cylinder head cover.

3. Disconnect the coolant pipes, fuel lines, and electrical connections from the cylinder head. Disconnect the high-speed idle linkage attached to the pump.

4. In the XUD 7TE engine, tilt the engine forward and insert a wooden block (see figure Placing a wooden block to secure the engine). Remove the intake manifold (central fastening screw).

5. Remove the power steering pump drive belt (if the vehicle is equipped with power steering).

6. Remove the left engine lifting eye.

7. On the XUD 9 engine, disconnect the outlet pipe near the manifold and remove it from the expansion tank.

8. Unscrew the bolt securing the pulley to the camshaft, unscrew the locking bolt and remove the toothed pulley.

9. Tighten the tension roller axle nut and remove the top bolt.

10. Remove the bolt securing the engine bracket to the cylinder head.

11. In the XUD 7TE engine, unscrew the three bolts securing the turbocharger to the exhaust manifold.

12. Unscrew the ten cylinder head mounting bolts in a spiral pattern, starting from the outer bolt, and remove them together with the washers.

13. Separate the cylinder head and remove it by guiding it to the right side so as to remove the end of the camshaft from the hole in the camshaft housing. The bypass pipe mounting bracket (on the right side of the engine) should be protected with a rag to avoid damaging the connection surface when removing the cylinder head.
