Note: Some transmission fluid level testers may require a square-head wrench to remove the transmission filler/inspection plug. These spanners can be purchased from many auto parts stores or your Peugeot/Citroen dealer.
1. Place the car on a level horizontal surface. The oil level should be checked before driving the vehicle or at least 5 minutes after turning off the engine. If you check the oil level immediately after a trip, some oil will remain on the gearbox components, which will cause inaccurate level readings.
2. Release the clips and remove the access cover from the left wheel arch liner.
3. Wipe clean the area around the filler/inspection plug, which is located on the left end of the transmission (figure 21.3). Unscrew the plug and clean it. Discard the sealing washer.

4. The oil level should reach the lower edge of the filler/inspection hole. Some oil will collect behind the filler/inspection plug and will leak out when the plug is removed. This does not necessarily indicate that the level is correct. To ensure the correct level, wait until the initial stream of oil has dried up, then add oil as needed until a new stream of oil appears (figure 21.4). The level is considered correct when the oil stops leaking. Use only oil of the correct quality and the prescribed grade (see "Lubricants and operating fluids").

5. Filling the gearbox with oil is a very labor-intensive procedure. First of all, before checking the oil level, you should wait until the level stabilizes (and this can take quite a long time). If a large amount of oil is added to the transmission and a large amount leaks out when the level is checked, reinstall the filler/level plug and drive the vehicle for a short time to ensure the new oil is fully distributed throughout the transmission components. Then, after the level has stabilized, check it again.
6. If the transmission has been overfilled so that oil flows out immediately after unscrewing the filler/inspection plug, make sure that the vehicle is completely level (in the longitudinal and transverse directions), and allow the excess to drain into the container.

7. Once the correct level is reached, install a new sealing washer onto the filler/inspection plug. Screw in the plug and tighten it to the specified torque. Wash away all traces of spilled oil, install the process cover and secure it with the clamps.
