Engines of the TU series are four-stroke, four-cylinder, in-line vertical cylinders, overhead valves with an overhead camshaft, carbureted or with a central or multipoint fuel injection system. Cylinder block of engines with a working volume of 1.1; 1.4 l is cast from aluminum alloy and heat treated. Holes for installing cylinder liners are made in the upper and middle parts of the block. In the lower part of the sleeve there is a polished belt, in which a groove is made for installing a sealing rubber ring. The seal at the top is provided by the cylinder head gasket.
The cylinder block of engines with a working volume of 1.6 liters is made of special low-alloy cast iron, the cylinders are made directly in the block.
The engine identification number is located on the corresponding plate mounted on the cylinder block, or stamped on the block itself. On engines with an aluminum cylinder block, the identification number is located on the plate or stamped on the block. On engines with a cast iron cylinder block, the identification number is embossed on the block only.
The engine identification number consists of three parts. The first is a reference number that is used when looking for spare parts for this engine. The second part is the engine code, the third is the engine serial number itself. In table. 3.1 shows the types of engines of the first generation (according to the manufacturer's classification) and their corresponding codes, which form the second part of the engine identification number.

On second generation engines with both aluminum and cast iron cylinder blocks, the identification number is embossed on the block only. In table. 3.2 shows the types and identification codes of engines, as well as the corresponding reference numbers (to search for spare parts).

The engine is aggregated with a clutch and a gearbox. The power unit is installed transversely on three supports in the engine compartment. The suspension of the power unit is shown in fig. 3.1.
