Removal
1. Remove the ground wire from the battery.
2. Raise the front of the car and secure it on stands. Remove the front wheels.
3. On models with power steering, drain the hydraulic fluid as follows:
- remove the lid from the feed tank;
- place a container under the high pressure pipe coupling on the steering gear, then unscrew the connection;
- drain the liquid into a container;
- finish draining the oil from the circuit by turning the steering wheel several times in both directions until it stops;
- disconnect the low pressure hose from the steering gear.
4. If present, remove the bolt from the steering gear heat shield.
5. On manual transmission models, disconnect the intermediate gearbox element bolt from the steering gear.
6. Make alignment marks between the end of the intermediate shaft and the steering gear pinion, then loosen the clamp bolt securing the intermediate shaft universal joint to the pinion.
7. Working on one side of the vehicle, loosen and partially unscrew the ball joint nut from the end of the tie rod and use a puller to remove the ball joint and completely unscrew the nut.
8. Repeat the procedure on the other side of the car.
9. Unscrew the two bolts securing the steering gear to the crossmember.
10. Rotate the steering gear around the horizontal axis so that the pinion is at the base, then remove the steering gear from under the right wheel arch.
Repair
1. Check the steering gear for wear and damage.
2. Check that the rack moves freely over its entire stroke length.
3. Check the play between the steering gear pinion and the toothed rack.
4. Check all hydraulic connections for leaks.
Steering gear repairs must be carried out at a service station.
You can only replace the steering gear protective covers, steering rod ball joints and steering rods yourself.
Installation
1. Install the steering gear in place, aligning the steering gear pinion with the intermediate shaft, taking into account the previously made marks.
2. Insert spacers between the lower frame and the steering gear. Insert the steering gear mounting bolts and tighten them to the specified torque.
3. Connect the power steering pipes and tighten the union nuts to the specified torque.
4. Install the intermediate shaft clamp bolt and new nut. Tighten them to the specified torque.
5. Install the steering rod ball joints into the steering knuckles and secure them with new nuts.
6. Connect the electrical connector and heat shield to the steering gear. Install the wheels and lower the vehicle.
7. Add fluid to the reservoir and remove air from the hydraulic system. Remove air from the circuit by turning the steering wheel from lock to lock several times. Add oil as its level decreases.
8. Check and, if necessary, adjust the wheel alignment angles.
