1. The steering gear removal and installation procedure suggested here is based on the manufacturer's instructions.

2. There is no strictly defined procedure for removing a power steering system from a gasoline-powered vehicle.

3. Loosen the wheel nuts or bolts. Raise and support the front of the car and remove the front wheels.

4. Unscrew the nuts of the ball joints located at the ends of the transverse steering rods. Disconnect the bearings from the steering knuckle arms using a special ball joint puller.

5. Remove the rocker arm pin from the gearshift mechanism (see B/ Figure 12.108).

6. Remove the clamp-stud and disconnect the gear selection rod from its ball joint (see B/Figure 12.109).

7. Unscrew the 2 nuts securing the steering column flexible coupling to the steering gear worm flange. Move the column with the elastic coupling slightly upward.



8. Remove the 2 bolts securing the steering gear to the crosspiece.

9. Remove the steering gear, being careful not to damage the rubber boots.

10. Installation of the steering mechanism is carried out in reverse order. Please note the following points:
  • a. Preliminarily adjust the position of both transverse steering rods as shown in B/Figure 12.110.
  • b. Apply a small amount of molybdenum grease to the ball joints of the gear shift mechanism.
  • c. Tighten all fasteners to the specified torque. Secure the elastic coupling and ball joints at the ends of the steering rods with new nuts.
  • g. Upon completion, have a specialist check the front wheel alignment angles.
