2. Checking and adjusting toe requires special equipment, so we recommend entrusting this work to a specialist.
3. If, as a result of some steering work, the adjustment of the tie rods was knocked down, you can pre-adjust the toe in order to drive the car to the nearest workshop, where you will have the toe adjusted exactly.
4. Convergence is the difference between the distance between the wheel rims, measured in front and behind at the level of the hub. You can make a special template to check this distance with the wheels set exactly in the center. The convergence of the front wheels should be 3-4 mm.
5. If adjustment is necessary, proceed as follows.
6. Early models without locknuts on tie rod ends. Loosen the clamp on the rubber boot at the inner end of the link and bend the boot so that the inner hinge of the link opens. Loosen locknut (see b/fig. 9.33) and turn the inner ball joint cup to change the length of the rod as needed. Turning the hinge cup half a turn changes the toe-in on the rim of the corresponding wheel by 0.65 mm. If you want to change the convergence by a significant amount (those. turn the hinge cup more than half a turn), adjustment should be made on both rods in equal proportions in order to maintain the symmetry of the steering geometry. After adjusting the toe, tighten the locknut to the desired torque, keeping the hinge cup from rotating. Do the same for the second rod, put the rubber boots back in place and fix them with clips. Refer to the previous section for correct installation of the rubber boot clips.
7. Latest models with tie rod lock nuts. Loosen the locknuts, and screw the rods into the tips or turn them out so as to obtain the desired toe-in of the front wheels. Turning one rod half a turn changes the toe on the rim of the corresponding wheel by 1 mm. And in this case, if in order to obtain the correct convergence it is necessary to turn the rod more than half a turn, the adjustment should be made in equal proportions on both rods. Check that the bottom surface of the ball joints is horizontal and tighten the lock nuts to the correct torque.
8. Once again, we emphasize that in the absence of special equipment, this adjustment should be considered as preliminary, and at the first opportunity the machine should be taken to a workshop where you will have the toe-in checked and finely adjusted.
