Important note: If both axle shafts need to be removed, they must be removed one at a time. This prevents the differential gears from shifting.
Removing the rear axle shaft is done as follows:
- An impact puller is required to remove the axle shaft.
- Loosen the wheel nuts and raise the rear of the vehicle until the wheels are off the ground.
- Turn the wheel away. This will expose the two wheel guide pins that also hold the brake drum. Unscrew these pins and remove the brake drum.
- Disconnect the handbrake cable from the lever and use a rod to knock the outer casing of the cable out of the brake shield.
- Unscrew the brake pipe from the rear side of the brake shield.
- Remove the 4 bolts shown in Figure 166. They secure the brake shield to the rear axle. The bolt heads have internal hexagons.

- Place an impact puller on the axle flange and use it to remove the axle shaft. If the car is securely supported on stands, you can screw on the wheel and remove the axle shaft by jerking the wheel.
- Before installing the axle shaft, apply sealing compound to the bearing receiving hole.
- Push the axle shaft into the axle tube until the splines engage and then tighten completely.
- Install the brake shield. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 170 Nm.
- Connect the handbrake cable and brake pipe.
- Install the brake drum and secure with two bolts.
- Remove air from the brake system (see section "Brake system"), put the wheel on and lower the car. Tighten the wheel bolts to 180 Nm.
- Check the oil level in the rear axle gearbox and adjust if necessary.

Since the removal and installation of wheel bearings and bearing clamp rings requires specialized equipment, it is recommended that bearing replacement be performed at a service station. After this, the axle shaft is installed without requiring any adjustments.
