General information
1. Depending on the model and year of manufacture, a driver's airbag, passenger airbag, side airbags and overhead side airbags may be installed.
2. The driver and passenger airbag system is activated in the event of a frontal collision, the impact force of which meets or exceeds a predetermined value, depending on the location of the impact. The airbag inflates within a few milliseconds and forms a kind of safety buffer between the people in the car and the car's interior. This prevents contact between the upper body and the vehicle interior and therefore significantly reduces the risk of injury. The airbag then deflates almost immediately. In addition, the control unit simultaneously activates the front seat belt pretensioners (see chapter 11).
3. Side airbags are built into the side of the backrest of each front seat. Each airbag has its own lateral acceleration sensor, which is mounted on the vehicle body. The side airbags are not connected to each other and operate individually.
4. The overhead side airbags are mounted behind the front pillar trim and the headliner on each side of the passenger compartment.
5. Each time the ignition is turned on, the airbag control unit performs a self-test. The self-test takes approximately 6 seconds, during which time the airbag warning light on the instrument panel comes on. After completing the self-test, the indicator lamp should go out (unless the passenger airbag has been deactivated—see point 6). If the indicator lamp does not illuminate, remains illuminated after the initial period, or illuminates while the vehicle is moving, there is a malfunction in the airbag system. The vehicle should be checked by a Peugeot/Citroen dealer as soon as possible.
6. On vehicles with a passenger airbag, there is a switch to turn off this airbag, installed on the instrument panel. The switch is activated using the ignition key and deactivates the passenger airbag (the driver's airbag, side airbags and overhead airbags cannot be turned off), to allow the installation of a rear-facing child seat on the passenger seat.
Precautionary measures
Caution! When working on vehicles equipped with airbags, the following precautions should be observed to avoid injury.
General precautions
7. When performing work on vehicles equipped with airbags, the following precautions must be observed:
- a) Do not disconnect the battery while the engine is running.
- b) Before performing any work near the airbag. by removing any of the airbag system components or performing welding work on the vehicle, disable the system as described in the next part of the paragraph.
- c) Do not attempt to test the air bag system electrical circuits using meters, testers, or any other test equipment.
- d) If the airbag warning light comes on or you suspect a fault in the system, contact your Peugeot/Citroen dealer immediately. Do not attempt to troubleshoot or disassemble components.
Precautions when handling airbags
- a) When transporting the airbag, place it with the lid facing up.
- b) Do not place your hands on the airbag.
- c) Move the airbag closer to your body, with the cover facing away from you.
- d) Do not drop or strike the airbag.
- d) Do not attempt to disassemble the airbag.
- e) Never connect electrical equipment to any part of the air bag electrical circuit.
Precautions for storing the airbag
- a) Store the airbag in a special cabinet with the lid facing up.
- b) Do not expose the airbag to temperatures above 80'C.
- c) Do not expose the airbag to open flames.
- d) Do not attempt to dispose of the airbag yourself: contact a Peugeot/Citroen dealer.
- d) Never install an airbag if it is known to be faulty or damaged
Disabling the airbag system
8. Before performing any work on the airbag components or in the surrounding area, the system must be disabled by proceeding as follows:
- a) Turn on the ignition and check the operation of the airbag indicator lamp on the instrument panel. The indicator light should come on when the ignition is turned on and then go out.
- b) Turn off the ignition.
- c) Remove the ignition key.
- d) Turn off all electrical equipment.
- d) Disconnect the ground cable from the battery (see "Disconnecting the battery").
- e) Insulate the negative battery terminal and the end of the battery ground cable to prevent any possibility of contact.
- g) Wait at least two minutes before performing any further work. If the airbag warning light has not been working properly, wait at least ten minutes.
Activation of the airbag system
9. To activate the system after completing any work, follow these steps:
- a) Make sure that no one is in the vehicle and there are no loose objects near the steering wheel. Close the doors and windows of the car.
- b) Turn off the ignition, then connect the ground wire to the battery.
- c) Open the driver's door and turn on the ignition without performing any manipulations in front of the steering wheel. Make sure the air bag warning light comes on for a few seconds and then goes out.
- d) Turn off the ignition.
- d) If the airbag warning light does not work as described in point c), consult a Peugeot/Citroen dealer before driving the vehicle.
