Note: Some models do not have a cable-driven speedometer (see "Vehicle speed sensor" in Chapter 4B or 4C).
Right-hand drive models
Removal
1. Remove the instrument panel as described in Section 9.
2. Open the glovebox, then remove the two securing screws (underneath the glovebox) and withdraw the glovebox from the facia.
3. Tie a length of string to the cable at the speedometer end.
4. Reach up through the glovebox aperture and unclip the cable from the heater assembly (see illustration).
14.4. Speedometer cable clip (arrowed) on the rear of the heater assembly
5. Identify the speedometer grommet in the bulkhead, then pull the cable down through the facia and pass it out through the glovebox aperture.
6. Untie the string from the end of the cable and leave the string in position in the facia, to aid refitting.
7. Working in the engine compartment, remove the two bolts securing the left-hand end of the brake pedal-to-servo linkage crosstube to the brake servo bracket.
8. Similarly, remove the plastic cover and loosen the two bolts securing the right-hand end of the crosstube (see illustration).
14.8. Loosen the brake pedal-to-servo linkage crosstube bolts
9. Unscrew the four bolts securing the brake servo bracket to the studs on the bulkhead, then carefully pull the servo assembly forwards sufficiently to gain access to the speedometer cable grommet in the bulkhead (see illustration). Take care not to strain the master cylinder brake pipes.
14.9. Pull the brake servo assembly forwards for access to the speedometer cable grommet (arrowed)
10. Unscrew the securing collar (or pull out the rubber pin, as applicable) and withdraw the speedometer cable end from the gearbox (see illustration).
14.10. Disconnecting the speedometer cable end (arrowed) from the gearbox

11. Carefully push the cable grommet through the bulkhead into the passenger compartment and withdraw the complete assembly from the vehicle.
Refitting
12. If a new cable is being fitted and a new grommet and cable bail-fitting are not supplied, note the fitted position of the ballfitting and grommet on the old cable and then transfer them to the new cable.
13. The aid of an assistant will now be required.
14. Working in the engine compartment, feed the end of the cable through the bulkhead into the passenger compartment
15. Push the grommet through the bulkhead, with the assistant working in the passenger compartment helping to draw the grommet through. Work the grommet through the bulkhead until the circular section seats correctly on the sound insulation inside the vehicle.
16. Working in the engine compartment, grip the lugs on the grommet and pull gently until the grommet lip locks into position in the bulkhead aperture.
17. Make a final check to ensure that the grommet is correctly located.
18. Reconnect the end of the cable to the gearbox.
19. Carefully push the servo assembly back into position and tighten the bracket securing nuts.
20. Refit and tighten the brake pedal-to-servo linkage crosstube securing bolts.
21. Working through the glovebox aperture, tie the end of the string to the cable and pull on the free end of the string, guiding the cable up behind the facia. Some manipulation will be required. Take care not to kink the cable.
22. With the cable in position and correctly routed, untie the string, then clip the cable into position on the rear of the heater assembly.
23. Refit the glovebox.
24. Refit the instrument panel with reference to Section 9.

Removal
25. Remove the instrument panel as described in Section 9.
26. Reach up under the facia and locate the speedometer grommet in the bulkhead, then pull the cable down through the facia.
27. Working in the engine compartment, unscrew the securing collar (or pull out the rubber pin, as applicable) and withdraw the speedometer cable end from the gearbox.
28. Carefully push the cable grommet through the bulkhead into the passenger compartment and withdraw the complete assembly from the vehicle (see illustration).

Refitting
29. Proceed as described in paragraphs 12 to 18 inclusive.
30. Refit the instrument panel as described in Section 9.
